Anonymous said: Being vegan is pretty accesible, you don't need to buy fair trade and organic everything or do eat vegan susbtitutes to be vegan, you can eat cheap raw vegetables and fruits, and some nuts and not break your bank. nomoremrnicespice: Why are you vegan? Because you love animals? Shouldn’t you also care enough about human beings that you want to buy from companies where the farmers who grew your food were treated fairly and paid fairly (i.e. “fair trade”)? Are you vegan for health/healing reasons? Wouldn’t you then need to buy food that is clean and free of additives, pesticides, hormones, and bad stuff (i.e. organic)? 2.3 million people in the United States live in food deserts where there is no access to fresh fruits and vegetables, even “cheap” ones. These areas, which are mostly low-income, have disproportionately high numbers of fast food restaurants. White neighborhoods have on average four times as many supermarkets as predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhoods and Black Americans are statistically more likely than other populations to live in food deserts. People spend most of their lives working. They need convenience food because their schedules are too demanding. Vegan convenience food is really expensive. Vegan convenience food is unavailable in many areas, food desert or not. Tbh it’s shameful to be vegan and not know how lucky you are to have that option. If you want to promote veganism being ignorant about it isn’t going to change anyone’s mind. Don’t try to convert anyone or tell them how easy it is to be vegan until you actually know what you’re talking about and can say you’re doing something to make healthy food more accessible. (And don’t question people who are telling you what is and isn’t accessible for their lifestyle and community.) i know it’s really cliched and often obnoxious, but THIS. SO MANY TIMES THIS.  nothing like moving to seattle to make a person really bothered about food and accessibility
